Open Access Publishing

Textbooks have become unaffordable for many students. Whereas tuition has only increased moderately or stayed the same at many institutions of higher education since the Great Recession, textbook prices have increased by 86% since 2005. Even though there are efforts afoot at colleges and universities all over the US to mitigate the impact of this increase on students, many students, especially in STEM courses and Health professions programs, have been unable to purchase required or recommended books.

Therefore, we decided to offer all new or revised textbooks and dictionaries as free PDF downloads on our website starting with the second edition of Principles of Anatomy & Physiology. We hope that faculty at other institutions will adopt this and other open access books in order to level the playing field for all students and to alleviate socioeconomic discrimination of students.

The files can be used online or downloaded for offline use. We recommend use of Adobe Acrobat Reader; follow this link for a free download.

Principles of Anatomy & Physiology 2nd edition
The two parts are designed to complement each other. The chapters in Part 1 Course Companion introduce students to the chapter topic; the chapters in Part 2 Lab Workbook are ideal for active learning in the lab and in study groups.

One of the more significant features is the integration of medical terminology throughout Part 1 Course Companion. Students learn about word roots and commonly used prefixes and suffixes, and how to analyze or build new medical terms. Throughout the chapters, the roots of terms are explained to help students understand how medical terminology works in all areas of healthcare in addition to increasing their knowledge and understanding of the material discussed.
