From the preface:
Welcome to the wonderful world of human Anatomy & Physiology! Learning the content of this book is an important step in preparing students for a career in the healthcare field. The two parts of this book contain the knowledge we believe health professions students need to master, regardless the area of specialization for which they are studying.
The introduction of Anatomy & Physiology for Health Professions 4th edition in 2016 was a very rewarding experience for us, our lab instructors, and, most importantly, for our students. We received tremendous positive feedback and the passing rates for both Anatomy & Physiology I and II courses increased.
Nevertheless, textbooks have to grow over time to adjust to a new generation of students and to changes in pedagogy both in the classroom and online. Because we decided to completely redesign and rewrite both parts, we also felt that it would be prudent to change the title of the books to Principles of Anatomy & Physiology to reflect the magnitude of the changes.
As before, both parts are organized into corresponding chapters. The chapters in Part 1 Course Companion introduce students to the chapter topic; the chapters in Part 2 Lab Workbook are designed for active learning in the lab and in study groups. The lab sessions will be built around the chapters, incorporating group learning and integrated lab activities. Our lab instructors will be more learning mediators than lecture teachers. We are very thankful for their support and excited about the improved learning environment these changes will create for our students.
One of the more meaningful new features is the integration of medical terminology throughout the book. In the past, students often struggled with understanding anatomical and medical terms used in the book and in lecture as they didn’t know the meaning of the terms. Starting with Chapter 1 Introduction into Medical Terminology, students will learn about word roots, and commonly used prefixes and suffixes. Each chapter in Part 1 Course Companion begins with a Chapter Outline, followed by a list of Learning Outcomes that describe the learning goals for each particular chapter. The next section – Combining Forms – lists and describes major combining forms used in the chapter or the subject matter discussed in general. This section is complemented by lists of Commonly Used Adjectives, Prefixes, and Suffixes and Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Symbols in the Appendix. Throughout the chapters, the roots of terms are explained to help students understand how medical terminology works in all areas of healthcare and to increase their knowledge and understanding of the material discussed.
Starting the journey through the human body, its parts, and their function can be daunting. This book was designed to make the journey an exciting process of discovery as well as one of growth in knowledge and understanding. We hope students will enjoy using this book as much as we enjoyed creating it for them.
