Principles of Anatomy & Physiology 2nd edition
Reuter/Weiss/Khalaf/Craddock

A Course Companion and Lab Workbook

The best approach one can take as a textbook author is to never change a winning formula but to improve and enhance what has proven to be of value to the users. Consequently, the second edition Principles of Anatomy & Physiology follows in the footsteps of its predecessors. As before, both parts of the book are organized into corresponding chapters. The chapters in Part 1 Course Companion introduce students to the chapter topic; the chapters in Part 2 Lab Workbook are designed for active learning in the lab and in study groups.

One of the more meaningful features for students is the integration of medical terminology throughout the book. Students often struggle with understanding anatomical and medical terms used in books, lectures, and videos because they don’t know the meaning of the terms.  Therefore, both parts of the book start out with Chapter 1 Introduction into Medical Terminology. Students learn about word roots and commonly used prefixes and suffixes, and how to analyze or build new medical terms.

Each chapter in Part 1 Course Companion begins with a Chapter Outline, followed by a list of Learning Outcomes that describe the learning goals for each particular chapter. The next section – Combining Forms – lists and describes major combining forms used in the chapter or the subject matter discussed in general. This section is complemented by lists of Commonly Used Adjectives, Prefixes, and Suffixes and Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Symbols in the Appendix. Throughout the chapters, the roots of terms are explained to help students understand how medical terminology works in all areas of healthcare and to increase their knowledge and understanding of the material discussed.

In another important change, we increased the Test Your Knowledge section at the end of each chapter in Part 1 Course Companion by adding new elements, such as Matching Word Parts, True/False, and
Matching, enhancing the sections' utility for self-study or study groups.

The book is currently in production and will be available for purchase starting in early August.
