Our History and Future
Reuter Academic Publishing is an imprint of Reuter Medical Inc., founded in 1998 by Dr. Peter Reuter as a continuation of his first company in the United Kingdom. In its early years, Reuter Medical Inc. focused on creating medical and scientific databases for reference publishing.
However, the company's focus evolved starting in 2012 from developing and preparing content to include the production of textbooks for students in the health/medical sciences and beyond. As some of the books in preparation are outside of the health/medical field, a new name was needed, and Reuter Academic Publishing was born.
As a small, independent publisher, the company’s mission was to produce high-quality, customized course materials that are affordable for students and that assist authors in turning their vision into reality. To assist instructors who have the vision to create course material that will help their students succeed in their courses, the company expanded further into the field of custom publishing in 2014, offering a variety of services, including copy editing, content editing, layout/design, cover design, custom artwork, printing, and digital content distribution.
Unfortunately, textbooks have become unaffordable for many students. Whereas tuition has only increased moderately or stayed the same at many institutions of higher education since the Great Recession, textbook prices have increased by 86% since 2005. Therefore, Reuter Academic Publishing decided to offer all new or revised textbooks and dictionaries as free PDF downloads on its website starting in the summer of 2022.
While this decision was popular with students, who appreciated unlimited access to helpful textbooks and reference materials, it didn’t provide a sustainable business model for the company. Consequently, the decision was made to shift the focus to publishing ebooks and, in due course, printed books outside the realm of college textbooks. This is, of course, a work in progress, and we will have to wait and see what challenges and successes the future has in store for us.
